We consulted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right one. They considered storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series targets the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge features in their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs an extra amount, I'd like to see better.

Other than that the fridge is a fantastic choice. It has a large freezer compartment that is not common for counter-depth French door fridges. It also holds a lot of frozen food items compared to other models.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is about the same as the size of a French door refrigerator that costs this much. It comes with a decent size freezer in the left side. But it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to make the perfect storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. The LED lighting adds an appealing touch. The storage bins in the door include a third shelf that can be folded down to store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls so you can set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the all the features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from any place across the globe. It also offers a lot of customization options. It also sends you notifications when the door is left unlocked as well as when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter needs to be changed.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill which is an option that is available in a handful of other GE fridges that allow you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to pour out at a time. It does offer a countdown feature on the fridge's display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a stunning piece of equipment. It's designed to look like it's a seamless component of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and two compressors for preserving food items. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is ideal for a small household or kitchenette that needs an elegant design and top of the highest quality food preservation.

This fridge was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just a few degrees Fahrenheit, never changing more than a fraction of an inch. This is essential to avoiding freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, reaching the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our tests.

Bosch is known for its high-end appliances. It's therefore no surprise that the Bosch counter depth refrigerator can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's platform Home Connect. This app allows you to monitor and control your fridge from your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is expensive, but it offers excellent features and functionality for the price.

While the fridge is an incredible appliance but it's important to be aware of the limitations. It has a narrow shelf space, which means you may have to think creatively when storing tall items. The shelves are not spillproof and can easily be damaged or stained by sharp items. It's simple to remove the refrigerator trays however, you must clean them regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great choice for those who need a lot of space in an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge features the standard French-door layout, with gallon-sized door bins on each door and two rows of spill-capture shelves and a set more spacious drawers. The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more space. There's also a full-width deli drawer and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker making it simple to transfer ice when needed. The freezer also has innovative design features such as sliding drawers that can help you organize your items. It also has a large bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food and an storage bin for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another cool feature of the refrigerator. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone.  french door refrigerator freezer 's a great way to control and monitor your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. The refrigerator took longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we tested. This could be due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. The handles that are sunken allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However taller people struggle to close them without slamming them. It would have been much better if they came with a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal option for those looking to combine the advantages of a fridge with a French door with a more efficient layout. Its capacity is above average for counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a little less than the most expensive counter depth refrigerator that comes with an ice maker, making it a great choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice for those looking for a French-door refrigerator that doesn't cost a lot of budget. It's a basic design that's not as striking in appearance as other models but it does have enough features to make it a good pick. Its most significant feature, the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food items such as vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser, as well as an excellent ice machine that works fast.

Another nice feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. The drawer allows you to divert part of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can keep food items that require extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider located outside the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling setting for the whole fridge, though I've found that adjusting the general settings tends to be more effective than specific ones.

During my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent across various parts of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance, but it doesn't quite make it to the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise readings of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge resistant" finish. It is capable of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
